Battersea

The garden’s creation took time.  Overcoming hurdles that were not apparent initially such as the consideration of any compromise of flood defences; the need to remove one gateway; the design morphed to accommodate these changes.

The Battersea Promontory is a unique Thames projection of this scale at the north west corner of Battersea Park. It was previously a predominantly grassed area with semi-mature and mature trees flanked on all four sides by iron railings.

The competition-winning Albert Promontory Garden design sits in this unique setting on the South Bank of the Thames. Retaining the railings and a number of existing mature trees, the new garden flows organically to maximise vantage points across the River.

The Promontory Garden is enjoyed by many park visitors with its enhanced riverside views from both banks and the park itself.

Its carefully considered planting palette, clean and simple design features and curved walkways are sympathetic to the Victorian design style utilised along the rest of the Park’s river frontage.

The plants – reflecting the Park’s heritage – include foliage, flower and seasonal interest with mid-range Japanese maples as intermediate focal points.

The project was funded by Wandsworth Council and the Friends of Battersea Park.  Chosen for its design excellence in reflecting and consideration of its English Heritage style and status in a Society of Garden Designers Competition.

The park was opened by councillors and Friends of the Park in January 2018 and its ongoing maintenance is in the hands of the Park’s Leisure Management team on site.
